World Cup of Golf Jul 21st 2023

Once again, the Gabriola International World Cup of Golf did not disappoint. This classic annual event managed to raise almost $200 that will find its way back to the Gabriola community.

According to the organizers, it was a lovely sunny day and 56 people registered. There were teams representing different countries or geographical areas. Team Australia drove in a first place finish followed by Teams Wales, Scotland and, staggering in afterwards, Team Liechtenstein. There were lots of prizes and everyone had fun.

Thanks to the players and all the volunteers that chipped in to help make this a great event.

An awesome steak dinner, expertly prepared by Lion Shirley and her culinary team, was provided by our principal sponsor Nesters Market. The event was hosted by our own Gabriola Golf and Country Club.

We would also like to thank our generous sponsors: WestJet, Coastal Community credit Union and Insurance, realtors Martin Velsen, Jude Briscoe and Guy and Tina, Gabriola Gravel and Excavating, Jim Noble, Pages Resort and Marina, Island Meat and Deli, Home Depot, BC Ferries, Butchart Gardens, Nanaimo Golf and Country Club, Aquality Water Services, Burnside Brewing, Somerset Farms, Concert on the Green, Eagle Quest Golf, Beban Park Golf, Golf West, Nanaimo Airport, and Gallery Press for the poster.

Hope to see everyone again next year. In the meantime, come out and see this jewel of a course on our island!

Team Australian, looking very confident before the tournament tee off. Other teams claim they ditched one of the members for ringer Greg Norman after the first hole. Reports of seeing Greg Norman lurking in the trees around the second tee box remain unfounded.
Team Scotland felt the win was theirs as they invented the game and so deserved the title. They didn’t win the tournament but they did win most original out of character costume.
Team Liechtenstein honored their promise of a beer a hole and by the 11th were totally out of the running for the win. However, not all was lost as they did win the karaoke contest later that evening.
Lion Shirley, with nothing better to do until the dinner service, offers helpful advice to those golfers on the first tee box.
Lion Maureen cruises the golf course letting participants know that the drink cart is at the fifth hole this year.
While Lion Larry samples the cheese plater, Lions Jude and Carol are joined by the skipper from Gilligan’s Island to help feed the hunger golfers arriving at the 9th hole.
